Best Survival Movies

I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately and decided I would compile a list of all the movies that I like or would like to see.  I’ve included all of the information you can learn from them and listed them in order of my personal preference.  Add your favorites in the comments.

The movies I’ve seen and I know you can learn from (in order of absolute awesomeness and what you can learn):

I Am Legend – Survival / Self-reliance / Escape and Evasion / Medical / Psychological Strength / Armed Resistance (this movie is a legend….to date; it is my personal opinion that this is the best “survival” movie ever created.  The attention to detail is unbelievable.  I will put a review on this movies here later.)

Zombieland – Basic Survival Rules  (the rules in this movie are classic and are actually applicable to true survival situations)

Terminator(Series) – Basic Survival (Terminator Salvation is the best in my opinion)

Alone in the Wilderness – Documentary about Richard Louis “Dick” Proenneke, a naturalist and survivalist living alone high in the mountains of Alaska at a place called Twin Lakes.


Alaska Silence & Solitude – A follow up Documentary to Alone in the Wilderness. (25 years later)

Nanook of the North – A film that studies Eskimo life including, hunting seal & walrus, building igloo’s and a number of other Eskimo survival skills.


American Experience: Surviving the Dust Bowl – The story of how people survived drought, dust, disease and famine.


The Great Depression – A historical look at the Great Depression.

American Experience – Influenza 1918 – A chilling look at the flu pandemic of 1918 that killed an estimated 675,000 people.

20 Years After – A Post-Apocalyptic story of a young woman who finds herself on a journey to deliver the first child to be born in over 15 years.


A Boy & His Dog – A twisted cult classic set in a Post-Apocalyptic America that has inspired a number of apocalyptic movies.

The Last Man on Earth – Vincent Price stars in the first big screen version of Richard Matheson classic, I am Legend.


The Omega Man – The Omega Man stars Charlton Heston in the 2nd on screen adaptation of the classic novel, I am Legend. This movie is a classic end of the world zombie flick.

Shackleton– The Greatest Survival Story of All Time - Based on the real life adventure of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s whose 1914 Antarctic expedition turned out to be one of the greatest survival stories of all time.

Intothe Wild – The real life story of Christopher McCandless, a man who shunned society and went off into the wilderness in search of adventure. The movie gives a chilling look into what can go wrong when an unprepared person tries to take on nature.


127 Hours – Based on the true story of Aron Ralston whose journey into Utah’s Canyonlands National Park would become one of the most horrific tales of endurance and courage ever told.

The Donner Party – Based on the real life events of a group of pioneers who get stranded in the Sierra Nevada and resort to cannibalism to survive.

Jeremiah Johnson – Robert Redford stars in the adventure Jeremiah Johnson, a movie about a trapper who learns to survive as a mountain man in the wilderness.


Never Cry Wolf - A biologist studies wild wolves accused of killing herds.

The Edge - After crashing in the Wild Alaskan wilderness two men find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear  in a brutal struggle for survival.

Damnation Alley – A post-nuclear movie in which nearly all life has been wiped off the face of the planet, leaving only a few survivors.

Deadly Harvest – A movie that portrays what life could be like if there were a serious food shortage.

Into Thin Air: Death on Everest – Re-creates an ill-fated 1996 expedition to Everest that claimed at least five lives, including those of two world-class climbers.

Lost in the Barrens – The story of two boys’ exploration of the Canadian wilderness.

Man in the Wilderness – After being given up for dead, Zachary Bass fights man and nature during his 600-mile Northwest Territory trek.

Survival Quest – It was supposed to be the ultimate wilderness challenge: Four weeks at the North Rockies Survival Quest School. But when the group crosses trails with an unstable and sadistic paramilitary squad, a shocking accident turns their nature trek into a desperate struggle for life and death.
